In Kidnapped, the horror that every parent fears is realized: what would happen if their child were to disappear? Even worse, what if the very thing you would think would assist you get justice is codified in law—that is, that horrible reality? It’s difficult to avoid becoming engrossed in the poignant tale of young Edgardo Mortara (Enea Sala), abducted by Marco Bellocchio and compelled to live a Catholic life. The film is breathtakingly beautiful, and its immense sense of scale brilliantly portrays the overwhelming hardship of the Mortara family and Edgardo’s personal crisis of faith. Writer-director Bellocchio’s visual language is fundamental to the plot.
Bellocchio’s script, which is based on a true story, condenses decades of struggle into an approachable two and a half hours while yet managing to make a difficult and complex past appear approachable. Although a historical drama about rival religious beliefs may seem daunting, this one is incredibly well-paced and emotionally compelling, which makes the story’s intense elements incredibly engaging. Backed by an amazing score by Fabio Massimo Capogrosso, Kidnapped delves into melodrama and even pure imagination, offering a novel yet deft approach to reconcile such an intriguing piece of history.
Enea Sala is incredible; it’s unquestionably one of the best child performances ever.
Kidnapped is most amazing when it centers on Edgardo and the tension between his love for his Jewish family and faith and the life he’s been forced into. This movie has a lot to say and covers a lot of material. Sala has a fantastic performance that quickly becomes recognized as one of the greatest child performances ever. As he is ripped away from everything he loves and compelled to live a life he doesn’t desire, you can feel his agony and uncertainty.
Though the movie places a lot of emphasis on religion, Kidnapped is more than just a story about faith; even atheists will be moved by its influence. Although this is an aesthetic treat, the impact it has on your emotions is what will be with you long after the movie ends.
